I’ve left a comment on this article. I wonder if it will appear. The story is a bit slap-dash, obviously not proof-read. The existing comments are predictable.
I have written to Education Review querying the statement therein that South Australia had abolished religious instruction in its 1972 Education Act. I wish that it were true, but alas in section 102 of its Act, ‘religious education’ is permitted in a half-day seminar each term. Parent Tammy Joachin has protested this, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pYfQD4OLxBY, and is presumably now awaiting the result of the present VCAT action.

Hi Harry,
Thanks for raising that point Harry. I reiterated your comment about the article as the debate has certainly not been neutralised here in SA! I do agree with NSW P&C’s Sowden comment that the distinction between religious instruction and education is often lost on parents,
with many believing their children are getting the latter. The “informed consent” notes I have seen here in SA certainly do not assist in making the distinction.
Yes – the existing comments are predictable and so much so that I can’t even be bothered posting a comment. This mindless echoing refrain of “we get our values from our christian heritage” etc is so bloody tiresome and one dimensional.
